While I do miss the grandiose scenery and laid back lifestyle of Europe, a major upside of returning to the United States is the presence of compatible sports fanatics. I’m still struggling to integrate myself into European soccer culture… I’m sorry, I meant football; but nonetheless, the like-minded enthusiasts are a welcome and sorely missed alliance that I am excited to be among once again.

College basketball season is now in full swing, the college football bowl games have commenced, and the NFL Playoffs are soon to follow. Smack talking and team representation are two of the biggest details that accompany die hard fans. A little smack talking never hurt anyone, but let’s focus on the latter. Believe it or not, it is possible to rage for your favorite team without body painting and a ridiculous costume. Try suiting up for your team in style!

Instead of throwing on every article of clothing that contains a team logo or motto, try diversifying those items. Maybe a hat, a scarf, and if you were blessed with the ability to earn a letter, by all means sport it; however, keep it simple. In a later article, I will touch on the importance of neutrals, but for now, try sticking with a pair of chinos or light colored jeans and add hints of your team’s colors. This will allow you to make a statement while dialing back the intensity of the gungho freshman fan inside of you.

Pair these jeans or chinos with a nice collared shirt and layer with a sweater in one of your team’s colors. This will show everyone that you are a sophisticated and style savvy fan as opposed to a “hooligan.” By utilizing these simplistic undertones, you can now sport a logo on a scarf, hat, coat/jacket, or maybe shoes without seeming too intense. Don’t forget accessories can also make a subtle statement about the team with whom you pledge your allegiance whether it be a watch, earrings (for women), or a pendant and charm on a bracelet or chain.

These simple tips will allow you to spill your heart out on the field or court with the players, without looking like one. Oh and by the way…

HOO HOO HOO HOOSIERS!
