STEP 1: Strive for a Neutral Heavy Foundation

Blue

Black

Brown (Khaki, Beige)

Grey

White

Green (Olive, Army, etc.)

You can never go wrong with these colors as a foundation. Swimming around this base of colors provides endless possibilities with a strong footing to build around. We want to keep these colors grounded to begin with, and opt for the earthiest tones, until we begin to get the hang of which color combinations suit us best.

Shirts and pants (casual and formal) of these colors can easily be mixed and matched to create many different basic and distinguished looks. Blazers, sport coats, and suits in these colors are very common and classic as well, giving you a plethora of different looks to add to your wardrobe from both the elegant and “chill” perspective. Each jacket in one of these colors can be used to pair with your favorite pair of jeans, chinos, sneakers, and other accessories to help give you a more distinguished look.

When it comes to adding separation (which we will discuss in more detail later), shade variations of these default, earthy shades can be used to add depth to your established foundation.

*White, olive (green), and chocolate brown are examples of variations of pants and jackets that add distinguished, and polished qualities to your wardrobe without stepping out of the neutral realm.
